The Delta Cultural Center recently opened its latest temporary exhibition, entitled Katrina Story Quilts. Admission is free and the public is invited to visit the exhibition.

The Lynn Meadows Discovery Center in Gulfport, Mississippi, was closed for eight months due to Hurricane Katrina. During that time, the staff visited 10 schools and invited children to explore and share their ideas and stories about their "new" world. The staff of the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center felt it was vital to give children an opportunity to "voice" their thoughts and feelings through art as part of the recovery process. The students worlked in small groups with a museum staff member and created art work for the quilts. The drawings were then scanned and printed on fabric and sewn into quilts.

The Delta Cultural Center will display four of the quilts. Themes for the quilts are What Katrina Couldn't Take Away, Rebuilding Our Town, Changes in the Neighborhood, and Katrina Surprises and Dreams.

The Katrina Story Quilts exhibition will be displayed at the Delta Cultural Center Visitors Center, located at 141 Cherry Street in historic downtown Helena, through September 29, 2006.
