The Delta Cultural Center recently opened a new temporary exhibit featuring photographs of Helena resident Rogerline Johnson.

Entitled Singin', Dancin', and Playin': The Photographs of Rogerline Johnson Revisited, the exhibit features 30 black and white photographs taken by Johnson during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Included in the exhibit are photographs of Count Basie (a friend of the Johnson family), B.B. King, Helena artist Dewitt Jordan and an early photo of King Biscuit Time host "Sunshine" Sonny Payne. The exhibit will be displayed through April at the Delta Cultural Center Visitors Center, located at 141 Cherry Street in historic downtown Helena. Admission is free.

A reception honoring the exhibit will be held at the Delta Cultural Center Visitors Center, located at 141 Cherry Street, on Friday, March 10, 2006, beginning at 5:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Rogerline Johnson was a talented and self-taught photographer who gave up a successful teaching career in order to capture on film the society he knew and loved. The photographs illustrate that Rogerline Johnson took great pride in his work and cared deeply about the people of Helena and the surrounding communities. Johnson recorded images that affected him both emotionally and personally. His passion was to communicate through his lens the worth and dignity of each individual.
