Additional Event Details

The Delta Cultural Center’s newest exhibit, “Old School,” focuses on the period following the Civil War when most African American youths were denied the opportunity to obtain an education.

In 1893, a confederation of Missionary Baptist congregations in eastern Arkansas pooled their resources to found a residential secondary school for African American youths. The Consolidated White River Academy or, as it was often called, the “Brinkley Academy,” provided nearly six decades of students both direction and inspiration. “Old School,” a photographic display recalls the academy’s story and the culture that produced it.

Featuring rare images of the Academy, its students and community, “Old School” covers a period during which public secondary education was routinely unavailable for African American youth. The Consolidated White River Academy and its peer institutions sought to remedy this deficiency, preparing young men and women for careers, college and life.

“Old School” has been organized with the cooperation of the Office of the Arkansas Secretary of State, the Central Delta Depot Museum, the Brinkley Fargo Agricultural School Museum, the Arkansas State Archives, and GLO-PAR/Park Central.

The exhibit will run through January 31, 2018, at the DCC’s Visitors Center, 141 Cherry Street. The Visitors Center is open Tuesday – Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
